As part of our training hub commitment to provide you with maximum access to training and courses, we have partnered with North Oxford Marine Training for the RYA VHF Course and SRC licence exam.

Duration: 1 day (Approx. 09:00 – 17:00)

Why Take This Course:
Marine-band VHF radio provides a means for vessel crew to communicate with other vessels and shore stations (e.g. ports, locks, bridges and marinas) on operational, navigation and safety matters. This includes certain inland waterways as well as coastal areas. Tidal inland waterways on which a VHF radio is obligatory include the Ouse, Humber, Trent, Witham, River Severn and the Thames. Further highly recommended for Lock and Bridge keeper communication on the Gloucester & Sharpness Canal.
The RYA radio course provides an understanding of radio rules and regulations to operate a marine SRC VHF DSC radio. It is a legal requirement for anyone who is using a fixed or portable VHF Radio to obtain a Shortrange radio Certificate (SRC).
What You’ll Learn:
• The basics of radio operation
• The correct frequencies (channels) to be used
• Distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures
• Operational calls to Lock and Bridge keepers
• Making ship to shore voice calls (such as marinas)
• Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators
• Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS)
• Calling for help by digital means, including use of Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) and Search and Rescue Transponders (SARTs).
Certification:
Shortrange Radio Certificate is internationally recognised and valid for life. Ofcom is the awarding body for the SCR licence in the UK.
The RYA manages SRC training and assessment on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency in line with the ITU Radio Regulations and the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT) SRC guidelines.
