Who is the ICC for:

If you are planning to cruise Europe’s canals or rivers then the International Certificate of Competence for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC) is your essential passport to boating freedom. An ICC is required for the inland waterways of Europe and the Mediterranean.

You may apply for an ICC for both coastal and inland waterways, with the appropriate vessel type helming certification. At Calcutt Training our focus is the inland waterways and we are fully accredited to provide ICC practical assessments right here on the Grand Union Canal.

The ICC may be taken on our centre’s training boat or on your own boat by prior arrangement.

What will the assessment cover:

  • Written/oral testing on overall safety knowledge
  • Route Planning
  • Practical testing of safety awareness
  • Pre-trip boat procedures
  • Boat handling and helmsman skills
  • Mooring and bank departures
  • Winding
  • Operating Locks and bridges

Certification:

The RYA issues the ICC under the delegated authority of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).  This meets the needs for boaters who wish to boat on the inland waterways in Europe and the Mediterranean.

You may wish to consider taking a full RYA Inland Waterways Helmsman direct assessment which qualifies you for your practical ICC endorsement. The assessment is a full day and allows for additional skills practice requires a minimum of 2 students.

Applicants for the inland waters category must additionally pass the CEVNI test on the European inland waterways regulations for the RYA to issue their ICC which is then valid for 5 years.

Calcutt Training is recognised by the RYA to conduct CEVNI testing. Click here for further details.
