Why Take This Course: O
ur RYA Diesel Engine course draws on Calcutt Boats proud history of being an all-service working boatyard for over 50years and the UK’s specialist in BMC engines. So, whether you’re a narrowboat owner, cruiser skipper, or just getting into boating, knowing how to maintain your diesel engine is essential.
The RYA Diesel Engine course is a beginner-friendly program teaching boaters how marine diesel engines work, introducing and helping you to understand not only the engine itself, but also the gear box, drive train and stern gear.
The course will introduce you to basic engine maintenance (filters, oil, cooling), troubleshooting common faults (fuel system bleeding, impeller replacement), and winterising. It aims to make owners self-sufficient and prevent costly breakdowns, covering essential systems and practical fixes without needing prior mechanical skills.
To consolidate and expand your learning further, Calcutt Boats Training builds your core RYA Diesel Engine course over the 2-days introducing faults and issue onto our training engines for you to troubleshoot and correct.
Our extended course also takes a look into the future, introducing you to hybrid-drives and HVO fuel alternatives.
Students will have access to our static and running marine diesel engines, with all the tools needed to practice and work on in them in our engine training room. Our aim is to build your knowledge and help you to develop hands-on, practical skills to keep you safe and prevent breakdowns.
